Tree-climbing lions, flamingos by the thousand, and a groundwater forest at the foot of the rift escarpment.
The scale and character of this destination, briefly.
Everything worth knowing before you visit.
Small but intense.
Lake Manyara packs four distinct ecosystems into 330 km² — groundwater forest, acacia woodland, the Rift Valley escarpment, and the soda lake itself. It's famous for lions that climb acacia trees (nobody fully knows why — possibly to escape biting tsetse flies, possibly to cool off, possibly just because they can).
The species you can realistically expect in Lake Manyara — with honest context on season and where.
The distinct areas and experiences within Lake Manyara.
Drive in under the canopy of the groundwater forest — fig and mahogany trees, blue monkeys, baboons. It's a lush, humid welcome; you won't associate the word 'forest' with safari until you've seen it.
Out onto the open shoreline where flamingos, pelicans, yellow-billed storks feed in the shallows. In a good year, the flamingo flock can be tens of thousands strong.
The Rift Valley wall rises 600m on your left the whole day. Sundowners on the escarpment edge — at the Lake Manyara Serena, or at Gibb's Farm nearby — are classic.
