About Kilimanjaro

An Kilimanjaro Primer

Everything worth knowing before you visit.

Kilimanjaro is the world's tallest free-standing mountain.

Not the hardest climb — it's a hiking peak, non-technical — but the altitude is real and summit day is brutal. Success rate depends entirely on which route you take and how long you give it. Our 8-day Lemosho runs at 90% summit. Shorter routes — 5-day Marangu — hover closer to 45%.

What You'll See

The species you can realistically expect in Kilimanjaro — with honest context on season and where.

Elephant

Cape Buffalo

Cape Buffalo
Massive herds of 500+ in the dry season. More fatalities per year than lions — respect the horns.
Leopard

Leopard
Solitary, nocturnal, and the hardest of the cats to spot. Riverine forests along Seronera are the best bet.

Inside Kilimanjaro

The distinct areas and experiences within Kilimanjaro.

The seven routes

**Lemosho** (6–8 days, scenic, high success). **Machame** (6–7 days, most popular, scenic). **Marangu** (5–6 days, only route with huts). **Rongai** (6–7 days, northern, quiet). **Northern Circuit** (9 days, highest success). **Umbwe** (short, steep, expert-only). **Shira** (fly-in option on the Lemosho route).

Acclimatisation is everything

Altitude sickness is the reason climbers don't summit. More days = more acclimatisation = higher summit rate. 8 days beats 7, 7 beats 6, 6 beats 5. Any operator selling you a 5-day Kilimanjaro is prioritising their margin over your odds.

Which route we recommend

For most climbers: **8-day Lemosho**. For climbers who can't commit 8 days: **7-day Machame**. For climbers who want beds instead of tents: **6-day Marangu**. For the fittest and most time-pressed: **4-day Machame Express** (we'll tell you your realistic chance honestly).

"I'm 63 and I summited Kilimanjaro. Thomas and the team were patient, professional, and made it possible when I nearly gave up at 4,600m. Eight-day Lemosho was the right call."
