The whale shark island. Tanzania's southernmost archipelago and its most protected marine park.
The scale and character of this destination, briefly.
Everything worth knowing before you visit.
Mafia Island sits just south of the Rufiji River mouth — the nutrient outflow from the river creates plankton blooms that attract whale sharks from October to March.
These are the largest fish in the sea, and Mafia is one of only a handful of places on Earth where encounters are predictable.
The species you can realistically expect in Mafia Island — with honest context on season and where.
The distinct areas and experiences within Mafia Island.
The whale sharks gather in shallow water just offshore. You snorkel, not scuba, because they stay near the surface. The right operators work on a strict code: no touching, limited swimmers per animal, boats keep distance.
Mafia's other treasure — a protected marine park with some of the healthiest coral reefs in the western Indian Ocean. Day snorkelling, dive trips, glass-bottom boat excursions.
Mafia is small. There are maybe a dozen properties on the whole island. It's barefoot luxury at best, genuinely simple at the lower end. No clubs, no high-rise resorts, just sea and sand and frangipani trees.
From mid-range classics to ultra-luxury tented camps. Swipe to compare.
