How We Do This

The real, practical version — not the brochure.

A regular safari and a photography safari are not the same trip.

Most safari guides want you to see the animal, take a quick photo, and move on. A photography guide understands that you need the right angle, the right light, the right moment — and sometimes that means waiting two hours with the engine off.

Custom vehicles

Our photography vehicles have beanbag mounts, full 360° roof hatches, reduced number of passengers (max 4), and charging for your gear. Tanzania Photography Safaris was one of our early specialty lines.

Guiding for light

Golden hour is everything. We start at 05:45 to be in position for the first light, and we return to the same subject repeatedly across days if we need better conditions. Your guide knows which kopjes face the right way for backlit silhouettes and which riverbanks get the mist.

Twice a year we run scheduled photography workshops led by internationally published wildlife photographers. Small groups, structured learning, major improvement in your craft.

Panthera leo Year-round

Lion

The Serengeti holds 3,000+ lions — the densest population on Earth. Look for coalitions of 4–6 males in Seronera.

Panthera pardus Year-round

Leopard

Solitary, nocturnal, and the hardest of the cats to spot. Riverine forests along Seronera are the best bet.

Acinonyx jubatus Year-round

Cheetah

Open plains specialists. Top speed 112 km/h, but sustainable for only 400m. Most often seen mornings.

Loxodonta africana Year-round

Elephant

African bush elephants, up to 6 tonnes. Matriarch-led family groups of 15–50 individuals.

Connochaetes taurinus Year-round

Wildebeest

Two million of them. The central character of the Great Migration. Synchronised calving in Feb.

Equus quagga Year-round

Zebra

250,000 travel with the migration. Stripes — no two zebras have the same pattern, like fingerprints.

Giraffa tippelskirchi Year-round

Giraffe

Masai giraffe subspecies — the tallest mammal on Earth, up to 5.5m. Tongues 45cm long for acacia thorns.

Hippopotamus amphibius Year-round

Hippo

Pods of 10–30 in the rivers and swamps. Africa's deadliest large mammal — more human fatalities than lions.
