Mikumi is Tanzania's fourth-largest national park and its most accessible — a five-hour drive from Dar es Salaam makes it a practical weekend safari for people based on the coast.
It's also underrated: the Mkata Floodplain supports excellent lion, buffalo, and elephant concentrations, and yellow baboons are everywhere.

The park's flagship habitat. Open grassland with scattered borassus palms, frequented by large herds of buffalo, eland, and zebra. Lions often on the road itself.
