About Mount Meru

An Mount Meru Primer

Everything worth knowing before you visit.

Meru is what Kilimanjaro used to be before mass tourism — quiet, wild, untamed.

The first two days of the climb go through Arusha National Park's forests, where you're escorted by an armed ranger because of the elephant and buffalo. The summit ridge is narrow, exposed, and genuinely thrilling.

"The perfect Kilimanjaro warmup. Four days on Meru, then rested two days, then up Kili. The summit ridge on Meru is more thrilling than Kili's."
