About Tarangire

An Tarangire Primer

Everything worth knowing before you visit.

Tarangire is the most under-appreciated of the Northern Circuit parks, and that's the reason to go.

Elephant herds of 50+ in the dry season. Baobabs up to 2,000 years old. The Silale Swamps, which keep the park green and water-rich even in September when everything else is bone-dry.

Inside Tarangire

The distinct areas and experiences within Tarangire.

Elephants on a scale you can't get elsewhere

When the surrounding ecosystems dry up, animals retreat to the Tarangire River. Elephant herds of 50–200 are routine. The parks' estimated 3,000+ elephants gives Tarangire the highest density of elephants per km² of any park in East Africa.

The baobab cathedrals

Ancient baobabs — some over two millennia old — dot the landscape. Their fat trunks store water; the fruit feeds elephants, baboons, and humans alike. A sundowner under one is a quintessential Tarangire moment.

Silale Swamps

The permanent wetland in the park's south. Hippo pods, enormous crocodile, and seasonal concentrations of breeding birds. Fewer vehicles make it here — a real wilderness feel.
