Tanzania's largest national park. Remote, wild, and home to 10% of Africa's lions.
The scale and character of this destination, briefly.
Everything worth knowing before you visit.
Ruaha is the largest national park in Tanzania and one of the least visited.
The drive in from Iringa is long; most clients fly. What you get for the effort is a proper wilderness — 10% of Africa's remaining lion population, enormous buffalo herds, the southern greater kudu, sable antelope, and genuine solitude on game drives.
The species you can realistically expect in Ruaha — with honest context on season and where.
The distinct areas and experiences within Ruaha.
The park's central artery. Dry-season concentrations along the riverbanks are spectacular — you don't even need to leave camp to see lion, leopard, elephant at the water.
Most Ruaha operators allow walking safaris with an armed ranger. Fly-camping (light bush camps, move each day, sleep under canvas) is also available — the most immersive East African wilderness experience.
Ruaha has been shown in recent surveys to hold an estimated 10% of Africa's surviving lion population. Mega-prides of 20+ are not uncommon. The park is also a stronghold for African wild dog.
