About Ruaha

An Ruaha Primer

Everything worth knowing before you visit.

Ruaha is the largest national park in Tanzania and one of the least visited.

The drive in from Iringa is long; most clients fly. What you get for the effort is a proper wilderness — 10% of Africa's remaining lion population, enormous buffalo herds, the southern greater kudu, sable antelope, and genuine solitude on game drives.

What You'll See

The species you can realistically expect in Ruaha — with honest context on season and where.

Lion
Panthera leo Year-round
Lion
The Serengeti holds 3,000+ lions — the densest population on Earth. Look for coalitions of 4–6 males in Seronera.
Elephant
Loxodonta africana Year-round
Elephant
African bush elephants, up to 6 tonnes. Matriarch-led family groups of 15–50 individuals.
Leopard
Panthera pardus Year-round

Solitary, nocturnal, and the hardest of the cats to spot. Riverine forests along Seronera are the best bet.
African Wild Dog
Lycaon pictus Jun–Oct

Africa's most efficient predator — 80% hunt success rate. Endangered; packs of 7–15 range across 700 km².
Greater Kudu
Tragelaphus strepsiceros Year-round
Greater Kudu
Spiral-horned antelope, male horns can reach 1.8m. More common in Ruaha and the southern circuit.
Sable Antelope
Hippotragus niger Jun–Oct
Sable Antelope
One of Africa's most beautiful antelope — jet-black males with backward-curving horns. A Ruaha specialty.
Cape Buffalo
Syncerus caffer Year-round
Cape Buffalo
Massive herds of 500+ in the dry season. More fatalities per year than lions — respect the horns.
Zebra
Equus quagga Year-round
Zebra
250,000 travel with the migration. Stripes — no two zebras have the same pattern, like fingerprints.

Inside Ruaha

The distinct areas and experiences within Ruaha.

The Great Ruaha River

The park's central artery. Dry-season concentrations along the riverbanks are spectacular — you don't even need to leave camp to see lion, leopard, elephant at the water.

Walking and fly camping

Most Ruaha operators allow walking safaris with an armed ranger. Fly-camping (light bush camps, move each day, sleep under canvas) is also available — the most immersive East African wilderness experience.

Lion density

Ruaha has been shown in recent surveys to hold an estimated 10% of Africa's surviving lion population. Mega-prides of 20+ are not uncommon. The park is also a stronghold for African wild dog.

"I've done the classic northern circuit twice. Ruaha is a completely different experience — wilder, emptier, with better big-cat sightings than I've ever had."
